I've Been Scammed - What Now?


We are sorry to hear that you've been scammed. The first thing to be aware of is that you are not alone and there is plenty of support available for you, being tricked into paying money or giving away your details can happen to anyone, and it's happening all the time.



You should take immediate action to prevent any further loss and swiftly report the scam to the relevant organisations. Our guide below can be used to ensure you are taking the necessary steps. You will also find links and numbers for further help should you need it.

Securing your accounts & preventing further risk

Actions to take:


  • Change all account passwords such as online banking and emails


  • Cancel any active debit and credit cards


  • Stop any contact with the scammer, even if they threaten you


  • Collate any evidence which may include emails, call recordings and info the scammer provided about themselves



Reporting the scam

If you have text messages from the scammer, report these by forwarding the text to “7726”. This is the official UK number for forwarding scam text messages. More info can be found by here.


  • If you’ve suffered financial loss, report the scam to your bank


  • If you have text messages from the scammer, report these by forwarding the text to “7726”. This is the official UK number for forwarding scam text messages. More info can be found by clicking here.


  • If you have emails from the scammer, report these by forwarding the emails to rereport@phishing.gov.uk. More info can be found by clicking here.


  • Contact Action Fraud with all relevant details. Call 0300 123 2040


  • If you are in Scotland and have suffered financial loss, please report the crime to Police Scotland

  •  Samaritans – if you're feeling overwhelmed or distressed. Visit samaritans.org or call 116 123. Lines are open 24/7


  •  Citizens Advice – local help with money, legal issues, and scams. Visit  citizensadvice.org.uk or call 0800 144 8848 (England) OR 0800 702 2020 (Wales)


  •  StepChange – debt advice charity. Visit stepchange.org or call 0800 138 1111


  •  Age UK – scam help and befriending services for older adults. Visit ageuk.org.uk
