Safe Online Shopping

In this section, we’ll guide you on how to shop safely online, so you can avoid scams and keep your personal and financial information secure. Shopping online is convenient, but it also comes with risks if you’re not careful. Scammers can set up fake websites, steal your payment information, or trick you into buying products that don’t exist. Knowing how to identify safe websites and secure payment options can help you shop with confidence.

We’ll walk you through the steps to spot safe and trustworthy websites, including looking for the padlock symbol in the address bar and checking that the web address starts with "https." You’ll also learn how to recognise red flags, like unrealistic prices, poor-quality websites, and unexpected requests for personal information.

By the end of this page, you’ll understand how to protect your payment details, avoid common online scams, and safely shop from your favourite websites with peace of mind.

How to Shop Safely Online

Shopping safely online is important to protect your data, money and ensure that you are purchasing what you are intending to. Below are some pointers for online shopping:

  • Shop on Trusted Websites - Only buy from trusted websites with positive reviews. Be cautious of unfamiliar sites offering too-good-to-be-true deals.

  • Look for HTTPS - Check for "HTTPS" in the website's address to ensure it’s secure before entering any payment details.

  • Use Secure Payment Methods - Pay with a credit card or trusted payment service like PayPal for better protection. Avoid direct bank transfers.

  • Check for Contact Information - Ensure the site provides clear contact details. If it’s hard to find or very generic, it could be a scam.

What to Do if You Suspect a Scam

Acting quickly but carefully is important if you come across an online shop that you believe to be a scam, and remember that it's always best to double-check and not rush your purchase.

  • Stop the Transaction - If you suspect a website is fraudulent, do not enter your personal or payment details.

  • Report the Scam - If you’ve already entered details, report it to your bank and the website immediately.

  • Use Security Software - Always keep security software updated to protect your device from malware or phishing scams.

If you are ever unsure if an online shop/website is authentic, feel free to reach out to us with the details and we can confirm.

What to Do After You’ve Made a Purchase

  • Save Your Receipt - Keep a copy of your online receipt or order confirmation. This will help in case you need to return the item or if there’s an issue with the transaction.

  • Check Your Bank Statements - Regularly check your bank or credit card statements for any unauthorized charges. If you notice anything suspicious, contact your bank immediately.

  • Track Your Shipment - Keep an eye on your order’s tracking number to confirm it’s being delivered to the correct address. If you don’t receive the package within the expected time frame, contact the retailer right away.

  • Report Fraud Immediately - If you suspect a fraudulent transaction, report it to your payment provider or bank immediately. They can often help reverse unauthorized charges or protect your account.

By following these steps after making a purchase, you’ll be able to track your orders, monitor your finances, and act quickly if something goes wrong.
