How To Spot A Malicious Website

In this section, we’ll help you learn how to recognise dangerous websites that might try to steal your personal information or trick you into downloading harmful software. Scammers often create fake websites that look real, using logos, images, and designs that imitate trusted companies. These fake websites can ask for your bank details, passwords, or personal information, putting you at risk of identity theft.

We’ll show you what to look out for, like web addresses that don’t look quite right, poor spelling or grammar, and warnings from your web browser. You’ll also learn how to check if a website is secure by looking for a padlock symbol in the address bar and making sure the web address starts with “https.” These small details can help you avoid dangerous sites.

By the end of this page, you’ll feel more confident in spotting risky websites and protecting your personal information from online threats.

What Is A Malicious Website?

A malicious website is any website designed with the intent to harm you or your device. These websites may try to trick you into giving up personal information, infect your computer with viruses, or install harmful software without your knowledge. Malicious websites are created by hackers or scammers who want to steal your data, money, or cause damage to your devices.

You may often find malicious websites sent by scammers via text, email or there could even be connections to the site from other websites

Signs Of A Malicious Website

Malicious sites are often designed to lure you in and look real. Below are some indicators to look out for:

  • Unusual Website Address - Watch out for website addresses that look strange or have extra characters.

  • Poor Design - Malicious websites often have blurry images, broken links, fake reviews or messy design.

  • Too Good to Be True Offers - Be cautious of deals that seem unreal, like gifts or huge discounts.

  • Pop-ups and Strange Requests - If a site constantly asks you to click pop-up ads or give personal info, it’s likely unsafe.

What to Do if You Think You've Clicked Onto A Malicious Site

Normally, simply clicking onto the website itself doesn't cause any harm, but it's very important to ensure that you do not start clicking around different pages or going any further without confirming. In addition:

  • Don’t Enter Personal Information - If you’re unsure about a website, don’t enter any sensitive data, like passwords or payment details.

  • Check for Reviews - If you’re unsure whether a website is safe, search for reviews or check with others who have used the site.

  • Use a Security Tool - Install security software (like antivirus or anti-malware programs) to help spot and block harmful websites.
